Morgan Ensberg rocketed 2 homeruns and had 7 RBI as the Houston Astros
man-handled the Pittsburgh Pirates - the final score was 19 to 6.

Ensberg was spectacular at the plate. He clubbed a two-run home run in the
1st inning, stroked a base-hit knocking in a run in the 2nd inning, lost the
ball over the fence for three runs in the 7th inning and doubled resulting in
a run in the 8th inning. Houston provided plenty of action in the 2nd inning
which saw them score 6 runs on 6 hits and the 7th inning when they had 7 runs
on 7 hits. Houston had 20 hits for the game and Pittsburgh had 11.

2006 AL Standings and League Leaders

 April 15, 2006

We're halfway through the 1st month of the 2006 MLB season in the AL. The New York Yankees won their first 9 games in a row before losing a 6-5 contest against the Minnesota Twins. The Yankees (10-1) are 1st in the AL East. My Detroit Tigers (9-2) have also gotten off to a good start on the season. They hold the top spot in the AL Central. The Seattle Mariners (8-4) are in 1st in the AL West. One big surprise so far is the bad start the Oakland A's have had. The A's (2-10) lost their first 10 in a row before winning the last 2. In individual performances, Boston's David Ortiz has mashed 7 Homeruns, 1st in the AL, and is 2nd in RBI with 13. His teammate Tim Wakefield is tops in the AL with 3 Wins.

2006 NL Standings and League Leaders

 April 15, 2006

It's halfway into the first month of the 2006 MLB season. A few teams have gotten off to good starts but none better than the San Diego Padres. The Padres are 10-0 in this young season, the only undefeated team in MLB. They've done it with good hitting and excellent pitching. San Diego leads the NL West by 2.5 games over the 2nd place Arizona Diamond Backs (8-3), another team off to a good start. The New York Mets (7-3) lead the NL East and the Chicago Cubs (8-2) are 1st in the NL Central.

2006 AL: Opening Day in Detroit!

 April 10, 2006

It was Opening Day at Comerica Park today for the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers came back into town after beginning the 2006 season on the road. They're off to a nice 5-1 start and even a dark, rainy day wouldn't keep anything short of a capacity crowd to show up for The Opener.
Jeremy Bonderman got the start for Detroit against Freddie Garcia and the Chicago White Sox. Jim Thome drove in the game's first run in the 4th inning. Detroit tied it up in the bottom of the inning on a Curtis Granderson homerun. Chicago went ahead again in the 5th, 2-1, when Jermaine Dye homered with what proved to be the winning run. The Tigers loaded the bases in the bottom of the 9th trailing 4-1 but were unable to score.

Justin Verlander dominated, striking out 12 Texas batters at Ameriquest Field
where the Detroit Tigers beat the Texas Rangers 8 to 2.

The Texas fans didn't appreciate the big day Chris Shelton had. He lofted a
three-run bomb in the 1st inning and ripped a base-knock bringing home two
baserunners in the 8th inning. Detroit had 13 hits for the night.

The victory went to Verlander(1-0) who went the distance allowing 2 runs.
Kevin Millwood(0-1) took the loss. Verlander was asked about his big
strikeout performance, 'Well, it's a little odd when you rack up these
numbers on the road - instead of cheers and a running tally in the stands,
everything gets real still and quiet. Just strange - but it's nice to be
able to take the crowd out of the game.'

Manny Ramirez rocketed 3 homeruns and had 6 RBI as the Boston Red Sox defeated
the Texas Rangers 9 to 3 at Ameriquest Field.

Ramirez was in a groove all evening. The Texas fans hated to see him
approaching the batter's box. He cracked a solo homerun in the 2nd inning,
cleared the fences for a two-run home run in the 3rd inning, laced a
base-knock in the 5th inning and lofted a three-run bomb in the 9th inning.
Texas was out-hit by Boston, 12 hits to 5.

The victory went to Tim Wakefield(1-0) who went 7 innings, allowing 2 runs.
Vicente Padilla(0-1) was hit with the loss. He served up 3 gopher balls in 4
and 1/3 innings.

'I was in my hotel room the other night, working on my swing and made some
adjustments,' Ramirez said. 'I'm always working on it. If they are getting
you out certain ways, you've got to make changes.'

Opening Notes on my SOM 2006 AsPlayed Replay

December 8, 2020

I recently completed a 1962 replay and had to decide what season I would do next. Usually I've got a good idea what's next before completing a replay, but not this time. Strat-O-Matic will be coming out with the new product in February and should be announcing which 'retro' season will be included very soon. Many years I've replayed that 'new' retro season as soon as it's released. I may still do that in February but in the meantime I've decided to replay 2006. I've never replayed a season after 1991 so this will be a first.
The 2006 MLB season was the first year in over a decade that the Detroit Tigers fielded a truly competitive team. Detroit finished 2nd in the AL Central Division to the Minnesota Twins and ended up being the AL wildcard team in the playoffs for the AL Championship. The Tigers ended up defeating the top AL team, the New York Yankees, in the first round AL Division Series. In the AL Championship Series Detroit defeated the Oakland A's and were crowned the AL Champions. The Tigers then went to the 2006 World Series to take on the NL Champion St. Louis Cardinals for the title of 2006 MLB World Champions.
Detroit didn't fair well in the World Series due to their poor hitting and even worse fielding. The Cardinals ended up defeating the Tigers 4 games to 1. My goal in this replay is to guide the Detroit Tigers back to the AL Championship and then to win the World Series. Below are the actual 2006 MLB Standings.
