Coming into NY for Game 5 against the Yankees the Minnesota Twins weren't even sure who would start on the mound for them. Their ace Johann Santana had been used in Game 4 and their next best pitcher Francisco Liriano had been injured before the postseason even began. Likely choice Boof Bonser had been roughed up badly by NY in his Game 2 start. So manager Ron Gardenhire went with Carlos Silva a 7-9, 5.06 ERA starter during the regular season. Mike Mussina, Game 1 winner, was going for NY.
The Yankees struck first in the bottom of the 2nd scoring 2 runs off Silva. In the top of the 3rd the Twins scored 3 runs, 2 coming off Michael Cuddyer's homerun. Minnesota scored another run in the 4th for a 4-2 lead, and then in the 6th inning Jason Kubel hit a 3-run bomb off NY reliever Brian Bruney. Minnesota led 7-2 and the boo birds came out from the NY stands. Hideki Matsui hit a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 6th, closing the gap to 7-4, but NY would go scoreless the rest of the way.
The Wild Card winning Minnesota Twins had defeated MLB's winningest team in the ALDS! After dropping the first 2 games of the ALDS the Twins won the last 3. Minnesota will now face the Los Angeles Anels in the ALCS.
