2006 Detroit Tiger news

 August 4, 2006

My Detroit Tigers limped back home last night after their longest road trip of the season. Detroit has lost their last 5 games in a row, their longest losing streak of the season. The 10 game trip started well with the Tigers taking 4 of 5 games. The losing streak started with an 8-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins. Then the worst team in the AL, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, swept Detroit in a 4 game series. The Tigers have scored just 10 runs and allowed 31 in the 5 game losing streak. They hope to right the ship when they get back home. Detroit still leads the AL Central with the best record in the AL, but the Chicago White Sox are now just 5 GB and the Minnesota Twins are 5.5 games back.

2006 AL Standings

 August 1, 2006

The month of July is in the books. My Detroit Tigers have the best record in MLB (68-37). They lead the league in RS and have the best pitching. That results in an incredible RS/AGNT differential of +172. Even with those #'s, Detroit is 2 games down from their Actual record in 2006 at this point of the season. The Chicago White Sox (6.5 GB) and Minnesota Twins (8.5 GB)  had mediocre July's, but still have Detroit within their sights.
The New York Yankees had the best July (16-9) in the AL and hold a 6.5 game lead over the solid Toronto Blue Jays. The AL West is the weakest Division in the AL but has the tightest race. The Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels are tied for 1st place at 53-52. The Actual Division winners, the Oakland A's, continued their struggling season in July and are 11 games behind their actual record.

2006 NL Standings

 August 1, 2006

The San Diego Padres have the best record in the NL as the calendar turns to August. Their 19-7 record in July was 2nd to Arizona's 19-6 record. Arizona is 5 games behind San Diego. The Padres are last in Runs Scored but have countered that with the top pitching in the league. The NL West boasts 3 of the top 4 teams in the NL. The LA Dodgers are trying to keep pace with the Padres and are 6 games back..
In the NL East, the New York Mets are in 1st place. Their +141 RS/RA differential is best in the league. The slugging Philadelphia Phillies are trying to gain ground on the Mets but trail by 8 games. They've scored 621 Runs, most in the NL. The Atlanta Braves really fell off the pace in July by going 6-18 in the month.
The Houston Astros still lead the NL Central, but the St. Louis Cardinals have been gaining ground and now trail by just 3.5 games.

2006 NL League Leaders

 August 1, 2006

NL league leaders as of August 1st. Philadelphia's Ryan Howard continues his assault on MLB pitching. No batter has been as successful at the plate than Howard (.337 BA, 46 HR, 125 RBI). While he probably wont grab the Triple Crown, his HR and RBI crowns look like a lock. Florida's Miguel Cabrera has quietly taken the lead in the batting title race (.390 BA) and moved into 4th in RBI (82). St. Louis Cardinal Chris Carpenter (15-3, 1.89 ERA)  has surpassed Houston's Roy Oswalt (13-2, 2.03 ERA) as the top starter in the NL. San Diego's Trevor Hoffman keeps racking up Saves (32).

Chase Utley hit 2 doubles and had 6 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated
the Florida Marlins by the score of 20 to 12 at Citizen's Bank Park.

The Philadelphia fans enjoyed the offense provided by Utley. He doubled
bringing in two baserunners in the 5th inning and doubled with all three
runners coming home in the 7th inning. Philadelphia bats were hot in the 5th
inning which saw them score 6 runs on 7 hits and the 7th inning with 6 runs
on 7 hits. Despite scoring in 5 separate innings, Florida could not get the
win.

The win was credited to Ryan Madson(4-5) who went 7 innings allowing 5 runs.
Brian Moehler(5-6) was given the loss. He was knocked around by
Philadelphia, allowing 8 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings.

Alfredo Amezaga smacked 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI but his offense was not
enough to carry Florida to victory.
