2006 AL Standings and League Leaders

 September 10, 2006

There's only 3 weeks left in the 2006 MLB season. The New York Yankees (92-49) have the best record in the AL and lead the Central Division by 18 games over the Toronto Blue Jays. The Yankee's magic # to win the division is 3. The Los Angeles Angels (76-67) lead the AL West by 5.5 games over the Seattle Mariners. Their magic # is 15.
Over in the AL Central division there's a good pennant race going on. The Chicago White Sox ((85-58) lead the Central by 2.5 games over the Minnesota Twins. My Detroit Tigers have continued to struggle in September (4-6). The Tigers are in 3rd place 4.5 games behind the White Sox, and are 2nd, behind Minnesota, in the running for the Wild Card spot.
Among the League Leaders are Chicago's duo of Jim Thome (48 HR, 119 RBI) and Jermaine Dye (47 HR, 119 RBI).  They are 1st and 2nd in the HR and RBI categories. Boston's David Ortiz (48 HR) is tied with Thome for most HR and LA's Vlad Guerrero (122 RBI) leads in RBI. Minnesota's Joe Maur (.353) is leading in BA. Minnesota's Johan Santana and Toronto's Roy Halladay lead all pitchers in Wins with 21. They're also 2nd and 3rd in ERA while Santana is tops in K's with 235.

2006 NL Standings and League Leaders

 September 10, 2006

The 2006 MLB season is coming into the home stretch.  The San Diego Padres (92-50) have the best record in the NL. But they lead the NL West by only 6.5 games over the Los Angeles Dodgers. That's because the Dodgers (86-57) have the 3rd best record in the NL and have the Wild Card spot pretty much locked up.
The New York Mets (86-57) lead the NL East by 10 games over Philadelphia (76-67) and their magic number to win the division is 10. The Houston Astros (80-62) lead the NL Central by 11 games over the struggling St. Louis Cardinals. Their magic # is also 10.
Among the NL League Leaders, the Phillie's Ryan Howard stands out. Howard (58 hr) is closing in on 60 HR's and has 151 RBI. He leads in both categories by a large margin. The Florida Marlins young 3rd baseman Miguel Cabrerra leads the NL in hitting with a .368 BA. The Mets Jose Reyes leads the league in SB with 62. In the pitching categories Cardinal Chris Carpenter leads the NL in Wins with 18 and has the top ERA (2.20).  The Padres Trevor Hoffman leads in Saves with 46. Cincinnati's Aaron Harang leads in K's with 206.

In a great finish the blistering-hot New York (AL) Yankees came back in the
top of the ninth and held on to win over the Baltimore Orioles by a score of
11 to 9 at Camden Yards.

New York (AL) came up with the deciding runs in the top of the 9th inning when
they scored 5 runs on 4 hits. The key at-bat was by Craig Wilson who
deflated the spirits of the home town crowd when he lofted a three-run bomb.
This was a game of many highs and lows for the home town fans, as the lead
kept changing - 5 times in all.

The win went to Darrell Rasner(3-0) who allowed no runs in 2 innings. Mariano
Rivera got the save, his 39th. Chris Ray(2-3) was given the loss in relief.
He was a hard-luck loser as he did not allow an earned run in his 2 innings
of work.

'The only way this one could have been better', said Rasner, 'was if we had
played it at home.'

Robinson Cano had 4 hits and 6 RBI as the indomitable New York (AL) Yankees
destroyed the lifeless Kansas City Royals by a score of 23 to 8 at Kauffman
Stadium.

Cano was really in 'the zone'. He delivered a base-hit plating two runs in
the 1st inning, smashed a two-run homer in the 2nd inning, ripped a single
which brought home a run in the 3rd inning and slapped a one-base hit in the
8th inning. New York (AL) bats were very productive in the 1st inning when
they had 5 runs on 4 hits and the 5th inning which saw them score 9 runs on 6
hits. Due to a poorly pitched ballgame, scoring in 6 different innings was
still not enough for Kansas City to come away with the victory.

Mike Mussina(12-4) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 and 1/3 innings and
allowing 7 runs. Jorge De La Rosa(2-3) was given the loss. He surrendered 3
hits and 2 walks in 2/3 of an inning.

New York (AL) continued their winnings ways improving their record to a
division leading 88-49. They are 8-2 in their last ten games. Buddy Bell
was unhappy with his club's recent performance. 'We can't keep losing games'
he said. 'It gets to be embarrassing after a while.'

Jacque Jones smashed 3 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Wrigley Field as the Chicago
(NL) Cubs beat the San Francisco Giants in 11 innings 12 to 10.

The score was tied at 9 after nine. Finally, Chicago (NL) prevailed in the
11th inning. Matt Murton got things rolling when he smashed a bases-empty
'big-fly'. After an out was recorded, Derrek Lee stepped in and he delivered
a single. Jones then bombed a two-run dinger giving Chicago (NL) the victory
and sending the 36,409 home-town fans home happy. Chicago (NL) rapped out 16
hits for the afternoon.

The win went to Roberto Novoa(4-5) who allowed 1 run in 1 inning. The losing
pitcher was Armando Benitez(3-6) in relief. He gave up 3 runs and 3 hits in
1/3 of an inning.

2006 AL Standings

 September 1, 2006

The month of August is in the books. The 2006 MLB season is into the stretch run. The New York Yankees lead the AL East by a large margin and have the best overall record in the AL. My Detroit Tigers had a horrible month in August going a league worst 9-20. The Tigers gave up 1st place in the AL Central to the Chicago White Sox and find themselves in 3rd place.
The LA Angels are in 1st in the AL West but the Seattle Mariners and Oakland A's aren't too far behind them. The Minnesota Twins currently hold the Wild Card Spot with my Tigers just 1 GB.
