2006 MLB Playoffs, NLCS Game #5: Hou. @ LA

 October 17, 2006

Houston's Roger Clemens and LA's Dereck Lowe locked up in a pitching duel for 6 innings before the Astros erased a 1-0 Dodger lead in the 7th and chased Lowe from the game. Houston led 2-1 in the 9th when LA manager Grady Little brought in closer Takashi Saito to hold the 1 run deficit. The move backfired when Saito unintentionally walked Jason Lane and then gave up a Grand Slam homerun to Morgan Ensberg. Chad Qualls came on to close out the game for Houston but gave up a 2-run homer to J. D. Drew, Drew's 2nd homer of the game and 7th of the postseason. With the score now 6-3 Houston manager Phil Garner had seen enough and brought in closer Brad Lidge who did finish the game, getting his 5th Save of the postseason. Clemens got the Win and Lowe the Loss.
The Astros lead the NLCS 3-2 now and the teams travel back to Houston for Game 6 and, if necessary, Game 7.

2006 MLB Playoffs, ALCS Game #5: LA @ Min.

October 17, 2006

The Minnesota Twins sent their ace Johan Santana to the hill in Game 5 of the ALCS hoping to close the Series out. But the Los Angeles Angels had other ideas and after a back and forth battle the Angels won the game 3-2. LA scored first in the top of the 1st on a Vlad Guerrero double. In the bottom of the 4th, Joe Maur hit a solo shot off Angel starter Kelvim Escobar. Both teams scored a run in the 5th inning and the game was tied 2-2. Then in the 8th, Juan Rivera just cleared the left-centerfield wall and LA led 3-2. Francisco Rodriguez came on to start the bottom of the 8th for LA and struck out the side. In the bottom of the 9th inning he walked a batter with 2 outs before striking out Torri Hunter to close out the game. The ALCS now heads back to LA with the Twins up 3 games to 2.

2006 MLB Playoffs, ALCS Game #4: LA @ Min.

 October 16, 2006

It was a pitching duel in Game 4 of the ALCS. The Minnesota Twins ended up taking a close 2-0 decision from the Los Angles Angels. Joe Mauer's 2-run double in the bottom of the 4th would be all the runs scored in the game. Boof Bonser and 3 other pitchers combined to shut out the Angels. Joe Nathan pitched the final 1 1/3 innings for the Save. Jered Weaver was a tough luck loser as he pitched a fine game for LA. The Angels were 0 for 7 with RISP while the Twins were 1 for 7, the difference in the game. Minnesota now holds a commanding 3-1 lead in the Series.

2006 MLB Playoffs, ALDS Game : LA @ Det.

 October 10, 2006

The Los Angeles Angels defeated my Detroit Tigers 4-1 today in Game 5 of the ALDS. While the Tigers out-hit the Angels 11-6, they couldn't push any runs across the plate until the bottom of the 9th. Detroit starter Kenny Rogers was the victim of an error in the top of the 3rd leading to 2 runs for LA. In the top of the 5th Rogers was chased from the mound when LA added 2 more runs for a 4-0 lead. Meanwhile, LA's John Lackey wiggled out of a few jams and ended up going 7 innings without allowing a run. Francisco Rodriguez came on in the 8th and pitched the final 2 innings, allowing Detroit's only run and picking up his 2nd Save of the Series.
The Los Angeles Angels win sends them to the ALCS against the Minnesota Twins. My Detroit Tigers season ends sooner than expected. They only scored 3 runs while losing the last 2 games of the Series. Curtis Granderson has to be mentioned as a big reason they lost the Series. His failure to get on base and drive in any runs proved to be costly. He went 0 for 20, striking out 9 times. After the outstanding regular season he had, it was a disappointing surprise.
