2006 AL Game KC @ Det.

 July 14, 2006

After having won 8 in a row shortly before the AL Star break the Detroit Tigers have now lost 4 in a row, matching their season worst losing streak. The Tigers lost 2 games right before the break and have now lost the last 2 right after the break. Tonight's game against the Kansas City Royals looked like it was headed to the Win column for Detroit before the Tiger's pitching and defense faltered. Kenny Rogers started for Detroit and from the get-go you could see he didn't have his best stuff. But Detroit's offense scored in 4 separate innings and Rogers, having thrown 105 pitches, left after the 6th inning with his team leading 8-4. The bullpen then proceeded to fall apart while KC battled back by scoring 4 runs in the 8th and 2 in the 9th to take a 10-8 lead. Carlos Guillen homered to lead off the bottom of the 9th but Detroit failed to score again and KC won the game 10-9.

Designated hitter Reggie Sanders had 2 base hits and scored 3 times as the
Kansas City Royals rallied impressively to win in dramatic style over Detroit
Tigers, 10 to 9.

Kansas City came up with the deciding runs in the 9th inning plating 2 runs.
After an out was recorded, Sanders keyed the rally when he drew a walk. Emil
Brown came next and he reached on an error. Tony Graffanino then drew a walk
to load the bases. Doug Mientkiewicz came up and he delivered a base-hit
driving home two runs. Mientkiewicz took second on the throw. Detroit
scored in 5 different innings, but their shaky pitching kept them from
victory.

Mike Macdougal(1-0) allowed 1 run in 4 innings, and picked up the victory.
Macdougal got help from Ambiorix Burgos who was credited with his 16th save.
The loss was charged to Fernando Rodney(5-4) in relief.

Kansas City now has a record of 38-51. With the loss, Detroit has a record of
6-4 lately, 59-31 overall.

2006 MLB All Star Game

 July11, 2006

The 2006 MLB All Star Game was played tonight at PNC Park in Pittsburgh. The pitchers from both teams didn't fare well in this contest. The host NL team jumped out to a quick lead when Houston's Lance Berkman launched a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 1st inning off Detroit's Jeremy Bonderman who had gotten the start for the AL stars.
It didn't take long for the AL to respond. In the top of the 2nd inning the AL assaulted 3 NL pitchers for 5 runs and a 5-3 lead. The big blow was a 2-run blast by Chicago's Jim Thome off Houston starter Roy Oswalt, sending him to the showers. The AL added 2 runs in the 4th and 3 more in the 6th but the NL wasn't done scoring either. They scored 1 in the 5th, 2 in the 6th and 2 in the 8th, sending the game into the 9th with the AL ahead 10-8. Neither team scored in the 9th and Chicago's Bobby Jenks retired the side in order in the bottom of the inning, striking out 2, to preserve the Win for the AL All Stars. There were 30 hits in the ballgame which saw each team use 28 players.

Bobby Jenks was strong in relief for American 2006 at PNC Park as the American
2006 ballclub beat the National 2006 club 10 to 8.

American 2006 brought 5 runs across the plate in the 2nd inning when they came
up with 8 base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Jim Thome who
silenced PNC Park as he bombed a two-run dinger. National 2006 was set down
quietly in the bottom of the 9th.

The victory went to Roy Halladay(1-0) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs.
Halladay was helped out by Jenks who recorded his 1st save. Roy Oswalt(0-1)

2006 AL Standings and League Leaders

 July 1, 2006

We've reached the month of July in the 2006 MLB season. My AL Central leading Detroit Tigers (53-27) have the best record in the AL. Their RS/RA Differential (+137) is tops in the league. Detroit was an AL best 22-5 in June, but they needed that level of play to remain ahead of the Chicago White Sox (49-30, 3 GB) and the Minnesota Twins (46-32, 6 GB). Detroit boasts the top pitching in the league while the offense is 1st in Runs Scored and 3rd in team Batting Average. Kenny Rodgers (11-4) and Jeremy Bonderman (10-3) head the Tiger's starting pitching staff. Bonderman's 118 K's are 2nd in the AL. Carlos Guillen's .336 BA is 3rd in the league and Craig Monroe's 45 RBI are 5th. Chicago has been getting excellent offensive contributions from Jim Thome (28 HR, 70 RBI) and Jermaine Dye (26, 70). They are 2nd and 3rd in the AL in those 2 categories.
The New York Yankees (48-29) lead the AL East by 4 games over the 2nd place Toronto Blue Jays (45-34). NY's Alex Rodriguez (.322 BA, 22 HR) leads the league in RBI (72) and Derek Jeter is 2nd in BA (.347). Mike Mussina has the best ERA (2.66), is 4th in K's (107), and Mariano Rivera is 5th in Saves (21). Toronto's Roy Halladay (11-3, 3.01) is tied for the league lead in Wins and 4th in ERA.
The Seattle Mariners (44-37) lead the AL West by 4 games over the Los Angeles Angels (39-40). Felix Hernandez (10-5), Richie Sexson (25 HR, 4th in AL; 54 RBI), and Ichiro Suzuki (.328, 23 SB; 1st in AL) are top preformers on the Mariners. LA's Vlad Guerrero (25 HR, 61 RBI) and John Lackey (2.77 ERA: 2nd in AL) head a good but under performing Angels team.
Baltimore's Miguel Tejada (.392 BA, 19 HR, 67 RBI) has the top BA in the AL and Boston's David Ortiz leads in HR (28).

2006 NL Standings and League Leaders

 July 1, 2006

The month of June is in the books. The New York Mets lead the NL East with the best record (49-30) in the NL. The Mets also have the best RS/RA Differential (+106) in the league. The team has been led by Carlos Delgado (.336 BA, 22 HR, 72 RBI) and Carlos Beltran (25 HR, 56 RBI). The Atlanta Braves are in 2nd in the East (46-34) 3.5 games behind NY. They had the best record in June in the NL, 19-8. John Smoltz (12-2, 2.85 ERA, 110 K) has been a big reason for the Brave's success. Smoltz is tied with Houston's Roy Oswalt (12-1, 1.67) for most Wins in the NL, is 5th in ERA, and is 3rd in Strike Outs.
The Houston Astros (44-36) lead the NL Central and are the only team in the Division above .500. In the NL West, the San Diego Padres (48-31) and Los Angeles Dodgers (47-32) have been battling for the top spot all season long. The Padres have had the top pitching in the NL and Dodgers have the top offense. The Dodger's J.D. Drew leads the NL in BA (.384). Normar Garciaparra is 5th in BA (.360) and 4th in RBI (65). The 3rd place Arizona Diamond Backs had a rough June (12-16), but are still only 5.5 GB in the West.
Philadelphia's Ryan Howard has been the biggest offensive force in MLB this season. In the Phillies 79 games Howard leads the NL in Homeruns with 34 and RBI with 91. He's also hitting at a .336 clip. Howard is on pace to hit 70 HR and 186 RBI. Milwaukee's Carlos Lee has been another offensive force in the NL. The Brewer is 2nd in HR (28) and 3rd in RBI (78).
