2006 Game Stories

 In the slate of MLB games played today there were a few note worthy events. In Colorado, the LA Dodgers pounded the Rockies 18-6. The 18 RS and 21 Hits were the 2nd most totals by any 1 team in a game this 2006 season. In Cleveland, the sizzling KC Royals defeated the Indians 3-1. For KC it was their 8th win in a row. The Atlanta Brave's John Smoltz (pictured below) struck out 15 batters in a 10-3 win over the Florida Marlins. It's the most K's recorded by a pitcher this year. The New York Mets and St. Louis Cardinals battled 21 innings before the Mets won the game 6-5 on a Carlos Beltran home run. It was the longest game played in MLB  this season.

The Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers enjoyed a blow-out, pounding the Colorado Rockies
pitchers for 18 while Brad Penny(4-3), with relief help from Jonathan
Broxton, allowed Colorado 6 runs.
 
J.D. Drew had a good day at the plate.  He cleared the fences for a two-run
home run in the 2nd inning, banged out a single in the 6th inning and tripled
which plated a run in the 9th inning.  Los Angeles(NL) lit up the scoreboard
in the 1st inning which saw them plate 5 runs on 5 hits and the 6th inning
when they had 9 runs on 8 hits.  Los Angeles(NL) finished with 21 hits while
Colorado ended up with 13.  
 
Broxton preserved the game for Penny, recording his his 1st save.  Jason
Jennings(2-2) took the loss.  He pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing 4 hits and
1 walk.

Second baseman Mark Grudzielanek had 2 base hits as the sizzling Kansas City
Royals beat the Cleveland Indians by a score of 3 to 1.
 
Kansas City came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 8th
inning plating 2 runs on 3 hits.  Kerry Robinson got things going when he
laced a base-hit.  Robinson stole second with some aggressive base running.
Grudzielanek then doubled scoring a single run.  Doug Mientkiewicz was up
next and he doubled scoring the final run of the inning.  Kansas City had a
total of 7 hits for the game.  
 
Andy Sisco(3-1) allowed no runs in 1/3 of an inning, and picked up the
victory. Ambiorix Burgos recorded his 9th save.  Rafael Betancourt(1-2)
absorbed the loss in relief.  He gave up 3 runs in 2 innings of work.
 
Kansas City won for the 8th straight time.

John Smoltz whiffed 15 batters at Turner Field as the Atlanta Braves beat the
floundering Florida Marlins by the count of 10 to 3.
 
Smoltz(6-2) contributed a very nicely pitched game.  He didn't give up much,
just 8 hits and 3 walks in 9 innings.  Atlanta totaled 12 hits on the night.
 
Ricky Nolasco(1-2) was hit with the loss.  He allowed 9 hits and 5 walks in 3
and 1/3 innings.  Joe Girardi was upset after the game.  'I don't like to
complain but did you see that umpires strike zone?', he said.  'Maybe they
ought to start calling the strike zone the way it's printed in the rule
book.'

Paul Lo Duca had 4 hits at Busch Stadium where the New York (NL) Mets beat the
St. Louis Cardinals in 21 innings by the score of 6 to 5.
 
Both teams had scored 3 runs after nine full innings.  Finally, New York (NL)
pulled the game out in the 21st inning.  After two were out Carlos Beltran
smashed a solo-shot out of the park.  New York (NL) totaled 17 hits on the
night.  
 
Darren Oliver(4-2) went 2 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Jeff Suppan(2-3)
was hit with the loss in relief.  The winning ways continue for New York
(NL).  They now have a record of 9-1 in recent days.  With the loss, the St.
Louis ballclub's record is 22-18.

2006 MLB As Played Replay Wrap Up
